Kiwi spotting

Your best chance of seeing Little Spotted Kiwi in their natural habitat

Whether you’re an international visitor or a New Zealander, one of the the most memorable experiences from this country is seeing Little Spotted Kiwi in its natural habitat – happy and safe.

There is approximately 1,200 Little Spotted Kiwi on Kapiti Island and with the Department of Conservation we continue to work hard to keep these little birds safe. Seeing Kiwi in the wild has been described by some as a life changing experience.

He manu kai te miro non ate ngahere,
He manu kai te matauranga non ate ao

A bird that feeds on berries shall inherit the forest, a bird that feeds on knowledge shall inherit the world.

Little Spotted Kiwi are extinct in the wild on the mainland. Because there is a healthy population of Kiwi on Kapiti Island, we offer you the best chance to see them in their natural habitat. The Māori name for Little Spotted Kiwi is Pukupuku.

Kiwis are the only bird with a nostril at the end of their beak. For more information on Little Spotted Kiwi, please click here.
